Each year, Lake Washington School District (LWSD) nurses provide vision and hearing screenings for students in kindergarten, first, second, third, fifth and seventh grades, with additional screenings offered as needed. These checks are essential for student success but staffing them can be challenging. That’s why LWSD leans on the support of WANIC Medical Careers students.

Under nurse supervision, WANIC students assist with screenings in elementary and middle schools throughout the fall and winter. They conduct acuity checks, document results and keep stations running smoothly; helping nurses reach more students in less time while maintaining high-quality care. Their professionalism and positive attitude have a big impact.

For WANIC students, this partnership provides hands-on clinical experience, patient interaction and preparation for certifications like the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) and Washington’s Medical Assisting-Certified (MA-C) pathway. Every Tuesday and Thursday, they rotate through stations, gaining real-world skills in workflow, communication and documentation.

WANIC Skill Center offers high quality tuition-free technical and professional training for high school Juniors and Seniors. These year-long, advanced-level Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are based on rigorous academic and industry standards and prepare students for career and college readiness. WANIC programs offer dual credit opportunities (both high school and college credit) and/or lead to industry certifications. To learn more about WANIC, visit the LWSD website.
