The Yakima School District is proud to spotlight the skills students are building in YV-TECH’s Fire Science program.
YV-TECH is an advanced preparatory training center, hosted by the Yakima School District, and serving students from 16 school districts across the Yakima Valley. The Fire Science program gives students early, hands-on access to the kind of training that high-demand careers in public safety require. Students build foundational firefighting and emergency response skills on the YV-TECH campus, better prepared to serve their Yakima Valley communities or beyond.
Inside the program, students develop the knowledge and discipline that the firefighting profession demands. They train in physical readiness, teamwork, safety awareness, and professional communication; the same expectations held by structural firefighters, wildland firefighters, EMTs, and other first responders working in Central Washington today.
That connection to the real workforce is built into everything the program does. Industry professionals regularly engage with students, providing feedback and helping them understand what it takes to move from training into service. Recently, fire service leaders visited the program, including Bob Horst, Assistant Chief from Quincy, WA, to connect with students and share information about open positions in the field.
For many students, Fire Science is the first step toward a career protecting lives, land, and communities. For rural fire districts and local departments, the program represents a growing pipeline of young people who already understand the expectations of service and safety before they ever apply.
The Yakima School District is proud to see this incredible work happening at YV-TECH: training students locally, building a regional workforce, and opening doors to meaningful careers not only in the students’ local rural communities, but across Central Washington.
