Our ProMed/CNA students have been working on understanding patients with impairments. Students have been using different types of hands-on tools that can replicate symptoms of the hearing and seeing impaired, and even have some tools that can make the students' joints feel stiff like if they had arthritis. Understanding the effects of these impairments is crucial in the healthcare field.

Three professionals from the Natural Resources Department for the Kalispel Indian tribe visited Environmental and Civil Engineering classes last Friday. Mike Lithgow, Bart George, and Johnathan Welch shared their career paths as well as the specific work they are doing with bears and cougars in northeast Washington, Idaho, and western Montana.
Students had the opportunity to practice locating a radio collar using a directional antenna and radiotelemetry receiver. They also took turns loading a tranquilizer dart (with water) and tested their aim on a cardboard cougar.
In addition, students got to meet their dog Boon who helps track the cougars in the field.
Thank you for coming and sharing this insightful hands-on learning experience for our students!! This may be a career our students may want to do one day.

Our Pharmacy Technician program is designed to move students beyond theory and into real-world application.
Through clinical placements at partners like Holy Family and Sacred Heart, students apply these skills in authentic healthcare environments.
By the end of the program, students are prepared to sit for national certification and complete the requirements necessary for Washington State licensure. They leave not just with classroom knowledge, but with documented clinical hours, industry references, and a clear pathway into employment or continued healthcare education.
First photo: Devyn (Mead HS) with Erin, her supervisor at Holy Family, working in the core pharmacy.
Second photo: Bella (2nd year, SIA) and Emma (North Central HS) at Sacred Heart, gaining hands-on experience in a live hospital pharmacy setting.
Third photo: Emma (NC) with her brother Paul (2024 graduate from North Central) — one of the first students from our program to earn his Pharmacy Technician certificate and successfully enter the field.

We’re excited to welcome Nikita Lavrov to the NEWTech community as our new Culinary Arts instructor, joining us at the start of second semester!
Nikita brings a strong blend of industry experience and passion for teaching. He holds a two-year Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts from Spokane Community College and has spent 12 years in the culinary industry, working his way up to Sous Chef at Table 13 in the Davenport Grand. His background gives students a real-world view of what it takes to succeed in professional kitchens.
Nikita’s goals as an instructor are simple and powerful:
Have fun and turn student interest into passion
Foster a supportive, hands-on learning environment
Encourage continuing education—whether through SCC, SFCC, NIC, CIA, or other pathways in the culinary field
Outside the kitchen, Nikita enjoys sports (especially volleyball, soccer, and football), video games, and experimenting with cooking “something out of the blue.” He’s been married for almost nine years and is a proud parent of four kids (two boys and two girls), with deep roots in the Spokane community—he has an extended family of over 100 relatives locally!
We’re excited for students to learn from Nikita’s experience, energy, and commitment to building both skills and passion in the Culinary Arts program. Please join us in welcoming him to NEWTech!

Today, our Year 2 Construction students led mock interviews with our Year 1 students. It’s a win on both sides: Year 1 students get real interview practice, and Year 2 students build leadership skills and learn what it’s like to evaluate candidates from the employer side.
